The use of a child’s voice, the expression of their fears, is something which always ups the sense of dread in a story. Our first story this week in Trembling with Fear is The Jangly Man by Dana Vickerson gives us a child’s nightmare. If you want a quick read, why not grab a copy here. If you’ve read his work in TWF, you will know he is a great writer and this continues in Seeing, a haunted house with a touch of southern gothic. I recently had a chance to read Patrick Winters novella, Seeing. I’m currently reading John Connolly’s A Book of Bones, a supernatural crime which is ticking quite a few folklore boxes. Nor are we averse to a touch of noir or a dark thriller. Submissions don’t have to be horror, they can be dark sci-fi or fantasy or some other aspect of the speculative fiction field. We publish both new and established writers with many becoming familiar faces and being an ongoing open market, we are always after material. The sheer vulnerability and terror of that would be horrendous.Welcome back to Trembling with Fear, our online flash zine. I could think of nothing worse – well, actually I could – what if this happened when you were going about your daily routine and not safely tucked up in a hospital bed. What must it be like to be in that position, to be aware of the world but unable to communicate.

These days, The Day After Tomorrow and its kind have replaced those earlier offerings but the genre still draws me, I think it’s probably why I like zombies as well – the end of the world is nigh! I wanted to write something that was an homage to this love of doom as well as explore the idea of ‘locked-in’ syndrome which I’d been reading about in the newspapers. I’ve been a lifelong fan of disaster movies – I grew up in an age when films such as Airport, The Towering Inferno and The Poseidon Adventure seemed to be on repeat on Sunday afternoons and which in a strange way have become my comfort viewing. With a wonderful cover by Kealan Patrick Burke and some editing mastery from Kenneth W. Published via Silver Shamrock Publishing, it is out on January 11th 2022 and is available for pre-order here. Finally I can share details of my new novella, Paused.
